"I appreciate you for protecting our rights and freedoms," writes Lilly, a third-grade student at Mintonye Elementary School. It is part of a brightly-colored thank you letter that she made as part of Veterans Day activities in her class.
"I salute you and honor you." writes another student, Emme. "Thank you for protecting us from terrorists that can harm us."
Teacher Connie Harper says the letters will go to local veterans, along with wreaths the students made with red, white and blue stars.
Earlier in the day, students heard from Major Steve Taylor with the Indiana National Guard. He shared stories about his service in Iraq and Panama with the U.S. Army. Taylor wanted the students to realize that Veterans Day is a day of respect and gratitude for what service men and women have done to protect our country.
Harper says Veterans Day activities are important for students to gain a better understanding and to develop a deep respect for all who serve.
