Books are fun, even new kindergartners think so
Have you read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault? If you haven't you should, it's a wonderful book.
In kindergarten we begin the year with fun read aloud books to engage students in the stories being told. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a classic read aloud book that is full of possibilities for lessons and activities and overall is a fun book for teacher to read and for the students to listen to!
It's a great book for kindergarteners to talk about the alphabet in a fun way. The premise of the books is the alphabet ends up in the coconut tree, first the lowercase letters go up then the uppercase letters help them when they fall out of the coconut tree. The book is a real page-turner as the reader finds out if all of letters can fit in the tree.
After each Mintonye kindergarten class read the book, they did a variety of before, during, and after reading activities to accompany the book. The after reading activity is kindergartners creating their own Chicka Chicka trees. It's a chance for the students show their individuality and creativity. They also get to practice new skills such as using scissors.
In the pictures you will see children coloring the letters, tearing paper to make authentic looking trees, and gluing the letters on the trees in a variety of ways.
