The Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) Foundation has awarded grants to several community organizations, including two schools in the Tippecanoe School Corporation—Dayton Elementary and Klondike Middle School. These grants will help enhance STEM and environmental education opportunities for students.

Dayton Elementary School received a $14,500 grant to support the installation of a polycarbonate greenhouse. The structure, measuring 26 by 36 feet and standing 12 feet tall, is made from durable, water-resistant polycarbonate and includes heavy-duty sliding double doors for easy access.

“The greenhouse is large enough to function as an indoor/outdoor classroom,” says fifth grade teacher Amy Ekey. “It will provide accessible, year-round learning opportunities and accommodate classes of various sizes. The space will help us support inclusive teaching and hands-on learning in science, sustainability and beyond.”

Klondike Middle School was awarded a $6,000 grant to purchase new equipment to enhance technology classes.

“This unit fosters hands-on learning, creativity and problem-solving,” says engineering and technology teacher Megan Doyle. “The grant will allow us to upgrade lab equipment, including safer woodworking machines and improved storage and organization systems in our new building. These enhancements will help us meet safety standards and maximize student efficiency and independence.”

One major focus of these technology classes is the Airblaster unit, where students learn to safely operate tools such as the miter saw, bandsaw, scroll saw, drill press, sanding machine and wood burning pen. Students then brainstorm, plan, build, test and analyze a car design as part of the project.

Doyle says the activity will help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while building their confidence in engineering and technology.
