Mrs. Avila’s Class Explores Pigs at Mintonye Elementary
Kristy Delp

In Mrs. Avila’s class, we discovered fascinating facts about pigs through a virtual field trip. We learned about their diet, proper care, and the various activities that involve pigs. It's interesting to note that farms housing pigs must maintain strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of germs. Every time farm workers enter the pig area, they are required to shower, change their clothes, and sanitize all items they bring in.
To simplify this process, there is a special tunnel connecting the buildings, allowing for easy movement without the need for constant sanitization. This tunnel also facilitates the transportation of pigs between different structures.
Since pigs cannot regulate their body temperature effectively, keeping the barn cool is essential. A single pig can have as many as 17 piglets! Additionally, a veterinarian conducts monthly health checks, known as herd checks, to ensure the pigs are healthy. Remarkably, farmers utilize pig waste as fertilizer, ensuring that nothing goes to waste!
