Mrs. DeGolyer’s kindergarten class investigated, sorted, and graphed candy in preparation for Halloween. The class also compared candy to learn that bags of candy are heavy. The class used a balance to weigh and compare common classroom objects with a bag of candy. The class had a STEM Candy Bag Challenge day following the investigation of candy, where they read several books that had different types of candy bags. Next, the class created a word web about the characteristics of a bag and explored different types of bags. After learning about characteristics of a bag and what makes a good bag to hold candy, the class designed their own candy bag. The class worked in small groups to create a candy bag. Learning about team work was a big part of the candy bag making experience. Using different types of paper, tape, yarn, and pipe cleaners, the candy bags were complete. To finish out the lesson, the class tested their candy bags to see if they would hold the weight of a big bag of candy. It was a successful project wit lots of learning and fun!
