For two weeks students in first grade studied the works of the author Mo Willems. Mo Willems is the author and illustrator of many popular children’s book series such as Elephant and Piggie, Knuffle Bunny, and the Pigeon series. Students watched interviews about his writing process, read many of his series of books, discussed speech bubbles, punctuation, character emotions and much more! "Mo Willems has animals in his books, and all the characters are always talking to one another. The books are funny!" said Tripp in Mrs. Miller’s class. First grade students are eager to read more of his book and borrow them from the library. To sum up this lesson the first grade classes did a craft activity of his character Pigeon. Each Pigeon had a speech bubble using one of the three sentence types: statement, question, and command.
