In Mrs. Helms' first grade classroom, young scientists are diving into an exciting hands-on science project—learning all about the life cycle of the painted lady butterfly!
The journey began with two cups, each containing seven tiny caterpillars. With eager eyes and curious minds, the students are observing these fascinating creatures each day, watching closely for changes as they grow and develop. Every student has their own butterfly journal where they record their observations, draw pictures, and write about what they see.
This project offers a unique opportunity for students to see science in action. From watching the caterpillars eat and grow, to the moment they form a chrysalis, the classroom is buzzing with anticipation. The ultimate goal? To witness the magical transformation as butterflies emerge from their chrysalises.
If all goes as hoped, Mrs. Helms’ class will soon celebrate the final stage of the life cycle: releasing their painted lady butterflies into the great outdoors. The students can’t wait to see them take flight and begin their lives in nature.
Through this engaging and memorable project, first graders are not only learning about metamorphosis—they’re also developing a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world.
Stay tuned for more updates from Mrs. Helms’ classroom as the butterfly adventure continues!
