Creative Writing Summer Camp Opportunities
Kristy Delp

Dear Mintonye Families,

Read the letter below to learn about a great writing opportunity for Mintonye students over the summer!

My name is Melissa Fraterrigo and I am a published author and certified teacher. Since 2014, I have been offering classes on the art and craft of writing to adults and children here in Lafayette (and also online). My deepest wish, especially in light of this past year, is to offer a warm yet challenging environment for young people to discover their voices through the written word.

I would love to tell you more about our summer classes in hopes you might share this information with your students and/or teachers.

I will be offering two classes for young writers this summer—Adventures in Creative Writing: A Summer Camp and the Youth Intensive Writing Workshop & Ask an Author. I have been offering the former since 2015 and the writing workshop had its first (successful!) session last fall.

In Adventures in Creative Writing: A Summer Camp, writers ages 8-12 will discover how to use words to experiment, inspire, and unlock their creativity. We’ll learn terrific ideas for stories, poems, and memoirs, and use daily exercises to encourage us to create publishable final pieces by the end of camp. Writing is a lot of fun, and this camp demonstrates just that. In addition, this camp features our Youth Writing Ambassador, a previous camper who is dedicated to assisting me run the camp. This camp meets the week of June 7 from 9-12:30  p.m. both onsite and online. Campers may select in what capacity they would like to attend camp.

Summer Youth Intensive Writing Workshop & Ask an Author (online) meets every other Tuesday beginning 6/1 from 7-9 p.m. EST. This workshop is for students ages 13 and older who want to strengthen their creative works and experiment with the craft of writing in a workshop setting. In this class we'll discuss the techniques of good writing, share our fiction and nonfiction, and create a community of writers and readers committed to discovering what we need to say. We will also read the novel Indivisible and meet the novelist Daniel Aleman. In this workshop, writers will find their inspiration and encourage each other’s words to soar.

I am happy to share more about these classes or more about my background. Please do let me know what questions you have. I would also be happy to forward the names of some parents in our community who can speak to my character.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Warmest,

Melissa Fraterrigo
